Nebraska native and owner Katy Montes de Oca decided to move to Vallarta after vacationing here. At first, she kept her job as a tour director in Alaska, Canada, and New England, working every day for six months and living in PV the other half of the year. After Katy married her husband Mariano (who grew up in Vallarta), the couple opened Sun Silver in 2005.
In Katy’s words: “I’ve always had a fascination with crystals, stones, jewelry, and art. So, when we decided to relocate back to Puerto Vallarta permanently, it was a pretty logical step for us to embrace all those loves.” Today, Sun Silver works directly with approximately fifteen jewelry designers in Mexico, most of whom live in Taxco, the most famous silver town in the country. The store specializes in both women’s and men’s silver jewelry, often utilizing semi-precious stones such as amethyst, amber, citrine, blue topaz, aquamarine, turquoise, and the famous Mexican fire opal. Katy strives to provide a wide range of prices and styles so there’s something for everyone, from simple hoop earrings to elegant, one-of-a-kind pieces.
