The Volkswagen Beetle, or “Vocho” as it’s affectionately known here, is undoubtedly the car of Mexico. Its affordability, versatility, and ease of repair have ensured the Vocho’s popularity since its arrival to the country in 1954. Production of the Beetle in Germany ended in 1978, and by 1996, the only remaining plant producing them was located in Puebla, Mexico. In 2003, Puebla made the last Vocho, which was given as a gift to the Pope John Paul II. Vochos are still a common sight on Mexico’s streets, painted in every imaginable color, and lifted, chopped, and shortened. But with no new ones being made, it remains to be seen how long the Vocho will endure.
