On March 11, 2011, an earthquake measuring 8.9 hit the coast of Japan and triggered a devastating 30-foot tsunami. Warnings were issued for cities all along the Pacific coast, including Puerto Vallarta. By the time the waves reached Banderas Bay, they'd been diminished in power and force, and met our shores gently. It was a stark reminder of how connected to each other we are.

It's been two weeks since these tragic events. PV Pulse would like to remind our readers that the emergency has not passed, and to provide information on how to contribute to the relief efforts.

We've compiled short list of aid organizations. All have online donation modules, and their relief strategy summaries are taken directly from their sites.

American Red Cross: Your gift to the American Red Cross will support our disaster relief efforts to help those affected by the earthquake in Japan and tsunami throughout the Pacific. On those rare occasions when donations exceed American Red Cross expenses for a specific disaster, contributions are used to prepare for and serve victims of other disasters.

Canadian Red Cross: The Canadian Red Cross is monitoring the situation closely and has emergency supplies and trained emergency response personnel ready to be deployed.

Care.org: CARE is sending a convoy of vehicles packed with relief items to Iwate prefecture in northern Japan to assist people affected by the massive earthquake and tsunami that struck the country last Friday. CARE will distribute relief items including toilet paper, water, face masks, sanitary tissues, biscuits, fruit and small portions of rice. CARE also will be coordinating with other organizations and local governments to assist people there in need for the next 12 to 18 months.

Direct Relief International: Reaching out to partners and emergency responders across the Pacific Rim to offer assistance.

Give2Asia: Donations to the Fund from JPRI’s friends will go to organizations in Japan supporting the relief and recovery efforts that are now being identified by our partners at Give2Asia.

Global Giving: This project will disburse funds to organizations providing relief and emergency services to victims of the earthquake and tsunami. GlobalGiving is working with International Medical Corps, Save the Children, and other organizations on the ground.

Oxfam: Our sister organisation Oxfam Japan is raising money for several local organisations active in the disaster areas providing help to vulnerable populations that might otherwise have difficulty accessing aid.

The Salvation Army: Salvation Army in Japan has three emergency service relief teams operating in areas devastated by the earthquake and tsunami that hit the north-east coast last week. One of the teams is assisting evacuees from regions where there is potential danger because of damaged nuclear power stations.
