Where Did the Papantla Flying Bird Men Go?

One of the main attractions of the Old Malecon was the amazing spectacle of the Voladores de Papantla (Papantla Flying Bird Men), but now they can’t be seen anywhere around.

The Voladores de Papantla are indigenous performers who demonstrate an ancient cultural tradition that is closely associated with the Totonac people from the Papantla area of Veracruz.

According to a report of noticiaspv, the Voladores de Papantla are blaming the SEMARNAT (National Environment and Natural Resources Agency) as the authority responsible for denying them the required permit to keep performing this indigenous ritual, as they were doing for the last 8 years until the New Malecon works started.

Trisanto Méndez Jiménez, spokesman of the Voladores, said that the City of Puerto Vallarta first told them that they were going to be re-located to the area just in front of the Punto V nightclub, but now it seems that the sub-delegate of SEMARNAT, Daniel Alejandro González del Rincón, is not authorizing the return of the Voladores de Papantla to the Malecon, for reasons still unknown.

At the moment, if you visit the Malecon of Puerto Vallarta you might see some of these brave and acrobatic men collecting signatures, trying to make their voice heard and, at least, get to know the reasons of why there is no room for them in the Malecon anymore.

Would you like to see the Voladores the Papantla back in the Malecon? If so, which area of the New Malecon do you think would be the perfect spot for them?

Why they weren't included as part of the master plan is indicative of how the administration has been beginning with the reluctance to share its plans of the Malecon and its funding. They were insistent on the unveiling of the statuary with great fanfare, but have faltered with not providing this rich and traditional spectacle to continue. We must all try to sign the petition if we're approached on the Malecon.

I always enjoyed watching them perform this ritual. They certainly will be missed. They had become a "must see" when visiting Vallarta!
