After a brief and controversial absence, the Voladores de Papantla (Papantla Flyers) Flyers are once again delighting the public of the Malecon with their spectacular show.

The Voladores de Papantla are indigenous performers who demonstrate an ancient cultural tradition that is closely associated with the Totonac people from the Papantla area of Veracruz.

For the last 8 years they had been performing their show at Puerto Vallarta’s Malecon, by the area where the Seahorse sculpture used to be. With the renewal works of the Malecon last year, they had to stop performing for months, with the promise that they were going to be reinstalled once the new Malecon were ready.

But for some reason that didn’t happen and these representatives of the ancient cultures of Mexico couldn’t get a spot at the new and revamped Malecon. So, they started collecting firms and talking to the media in order to attract the attention of the people and put some pressure on the authorities.

It certainly seems now that the strategy worked out very well, as last Saturday was the first day that the Voladores de Papantla performed their act at their new spot on the Malecon. Look for them when you visit the Malecon, their amazing ritual is quite spectacular and full of symbolisms.

The Malecon keeps getting better and with this latest addition, our visitors have the opportunity to get a glimpse of the rich Mexican folklore.
