The latest reports on the state of the third biggest source of currencies in Mexico: tourism (after oil and remittances), signal that the industry is back on track after a couple of difficult years.

First, the Spanish newspaper adn reported that the occupancy rate in Mexico grew by 4.5% on the current summer season, compared to the same period last year. Riviera Maya scored the highest rate occupancy of all Mexican destinations with an impressive 85%, followed by Mazatlan, Cancun, Nuevo Vallarta and Puerto Vallarta. Our twin towns got a very respectable 73% and 72% respectively.

On the other hand, the Mexican Tourism Board hinted that cruises lines were considering a return to Mexican ports. In words of Rodolfo López-Negrete, chief operating officer of the Mexican Tourism Board some of the cruise lines “admit a little bit of overreaction” to the negative press produced by the so-called “war on drugs”.

Let’s remember that in the last few months some major cruise lines cancelled their stops at Mexican ports alleging safety concerns. But López-Negrete believes the cruise lines “…will come back to Mazatlan and Puerto Vallarta”, according with the North County Times.

So, despite the grim perspective painted by some news networks, these reports added to the upcoming celebration of the Pan American Games, are good indicators that, at least on the tourism front, Mexico is doing just fine.
