Hurricane Beatriz
Update: Mexico's National Weather Service has reported that after heavy rains this morning, Hurricane Beatriz has been downgraded to a tropical storm, and is moving away from Mexico's coast. Rains are expected to continue over the coming days. (3:00pm local time)

A reported 90,000 people joined anti-violence demonstrators in Mexico City's zócalo yesterday, where they converged after a three-day walk from Cuernavaca protesting the on-going drug-related violence in the country. Poet Javier Sicilia addressed the crowd, calling for the resignation of Secretary of Public Security, Genaro Garcia Luna.

On Thursday, May 5, more than 600 people began the three-day journey from Cuernavaca to Mexico City to protest the ongoing drug-related violence in Mexico. The group was led by poet Javier Sicilia, whose son was killed by suspected drug traffickers in March.
5.8 Magnitude Earthquake Rattles Guerrero State
A 5.8 magnitude earthquake rattled the state of Guerrero at 8:24am on Thursday May 5th. The epicenter was 88 miles east of Acapulco at a depth of 6.3 miles. The earthquake was felt as far as Mexico City. No major damages were reported by the Civil Protection Agency.

Fires Continue to Burn in Coahuila State, Nine Communities Put on Preventive Alert
