Named after owner Lucy Givens, Lucy’s Cucú Cabaña has been offering some of the finest Mexican folk art in Puerto Vallarta since 1993. Located in Old Town, the store has been featured in both Frommer’s and Fodor’s travel guides. The recognition is certainly well-deserved.
Lucy and her husband Gil have lived in PV for almost thirty years. Originally from the U.S., they opened a furniture store here, but eventually decided to switch to folk art. Every summer, they spend four months traveling through southern Mexico in a “little pickup truck,” visiting artisans in 200 small towns.
All this leg-work has paid off. Today, Lucy’s boasts a collection of one-of-a-kind, quality pieces that come from the state of Jalisco all the way down south to the border with Guatemala: vibrantly painted hand-carved wooden animals from the Zapotecs in Oaxaca, wool rugs, masks, Day of the Dead skeletons, Talavera dishware, Taxco silver jewelry, and textiles from Chiapas. The store is also a great place to buy the three novels about PV that Gil has written: Puerto Vallarta on a Donkey a Day, Refried Brains, and Puerto Vallarta on 49 Brain Cells a Day.
