Like so many people after them, Peter Bowman and his wife Tari decided to move to Puerto Vallarta after visiting with their two young children almost thirty years ago. The couple sold their home in Lafayette, California, moved to PV, and bought Daiquiri Dick’s, which has since become one of the most famous and successful restaurants in town. But Peter is even better known for his reputation as Vallarta’s foremost interior designer, appearing in Architectural Digest magazine four times. It was this love of design that spurred him to open the Banderas Bay Trading Company, and three years later, the Banderas Bay Trading Company Annex (conveniently located only a few blocks away).
Entering either store feels like stepping back in time. Both stores are bathed in golden light and filled with a jaw-dropping assortment of decorative pieces and furnishings. Many, like the religious art pieces, are antiques around 100 years old. Some are from the colonial period 200 years ago. Others were designed by Peter himself, such as the beds and lighting. The stores also feature tinwork from San Miguel de Allende, Talavera pottery from Dolores Hidalgo, and ceramics from Michoacán. The Annex specializes in larger antique pieces such as armoires and doors.
Phyllis, one of the store’s employees, described Peter’s style for us: “It’s clean. It’s eclectic, with elements of modern pieces mixed with some colonial antiques, but it makes a really nice and interesting balance.”
Whether you’re looking to decorate your home with some Mexican style, or you’re just looking for a one-of-a-kind piece of Mexican folk art, the Banderas Bay Trading Company is highly recommended.
