Puerto Vallarta & Riviera Nayarit have built in recent years a reputation as a great gastronomic destination. This well-deserved fame came not only from the impressive number of top-end restaurantes along its shores, but also from the organización of a series of attractive festivals like the annual Festival Gourmet, the Wine Festival, the Punta Mita Gourmet & Golf Classic, and the Restaurant Week among others.
The evolution of Vallarta Nayarit in terms of gastronomy has come hand in hand with the growth of the large expat community in the region. While Mexican cuisine is world famous and recently recognized by UNESCO as Immaterial Heritage of Humanity, truth is that for Mexicans is not customary dining out. On the other hand, for Americans and Canadians alike going to a good restaurant to enjoy dinner is a well established practice. So, when more and more North American expats kept moving to the area, more good restaurants where needed.
Nowadays, the gourmet scene in Puerto Vallarta and Riviera Nayarit is buzzing with some of the best restaurants in the country, which offer a wide diversity of dishes from mostly the amazingly rich Mexican cuisine, but also from other cuisines like the Italian, Japanese, French, Spanish, Indian and some interesting fusion experiments.
Notwithstanding the excellent dining options in town, you can’t overlook the stunning street food available in the region. Nothing can compare to enjoying some exquisite ‘tacos al pastor’ in a little stand by the street, or getting a ‘pescado embarazado’ (fish on a stick) while sunbathing by the beach.
Either in a sophisticated festival, a top-notch restaurant or at a taco stand, the only thing we can say is buen provecho!
